How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Package each money drawer or cabinet in a rigid box or a well-built wood crate. Lock compartments, secure slides, and use foam blocking so tills and inserts do not shift in transit.
  2. Note the correct description on the BOL: “NMFC 57630 – Money drawers/cabinets (not cash registers), boxed/crated, Class 85.” This helps prevent reclass and inspections.
  3. Palletize carefully: place heavy metal units base-down, add corner boards, strap and stretch-wrap, and avoid pallet overhang to reduce denting and claims.
  4. If pedestal supports are included, bundle them within the same box/crate or on the same pallet and call them out on the packing list. Review NMFC Note, item 57632 before tendering.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable pricing: Fixed Class 85 means no density calculation, enabling faster, cleaner LTL quotes.
  • Lower reclass risk: Using the precise “not cash registers” description and boxed/crated packaging cuts dispute and inspection fees.
  • Reduced loss and damage: Locking hardware and rigid crating minimize breakage and theft exposure for retail and banking operations.
  • Operational efficiency: Non-hazardous status and standard LTL handling accelerate pickups, transit, and receiving at stores or branches.
