How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 58700 and Class 110 on the BOL, noting boxed contraceptive sponges impregnated with spermicide; density is not required for rating.
- Use rigid corrugated boxes and add corner boards and stretch wrap to prevent crushing; mark cartons “Do Not Top-Load” if pallets will be stacked.
- Palletize in stable, squared columns on 48x40 pallets; keep cartons within the pallet footprint and strap or wrap to avoid deformation in transit.
- Include lot and expiration labels on master cartons for clinic and retail receiving; keep shipments dry and away from excessive heat during transport.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 110 provides predictable LTL pricing and reduces reclass disputes and rebills.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges and paperwork.
- Boxed packaging with proper palletizing lowers damage risk on foam items, cutting claim costs and returns.
- Clear carton labeling (lot/expiry) accelerates inbound processing and strengthens recall traceability for healthcare buyers.
