How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote the commodity exactly as “Corn Silk, dry” within the Drugs/Medicines group. Because class is not set (N/A), request the carrier’s written class or exception rating before pickup.
- Use moisture-barrier packaging: poly-lined kraft bags, sealed fiber drums with tamper-evident rings, or compressed bales in heavy poly. Double-bag if humidity risk is high.
- Palletize for cube efficiency: 40x48 pallets, no overhang, corner boards, stretch wrap, and a top sheet labeled “Keep Dry.” Keep stacks light and stable for easy LTL handling.
- Document clearly: include botanical name (Zea mays stigma), lot/COA, net weight per package, and note “Non-hazardous.” Share SDS/ingredient statement if required by the consignee.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and simplifies routing in LTL networks.
- Stackable drums or well-tied bags reduce damage and reclass exposure, preventing surprise adjustments.
- Accurate commodity naming and paperwork minimize inspections, speeding transit and delivery appointments.
- Moisture-controlled packing cuts spoilage and claims, stabilizing freight rates across nutraceutical lanes.
