How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Specify NMFC 58820, Class 85 on the BOL and describe: frozen amniotic or fetal fluid in inner containers, boxed; add Keep Frozen and orientation arrows.
- Use triple packaging: leakproof primary vials or bottles, absorbent secondary sleeve or canister, then a rigid corrugated outer box with snug cushioning.
- Maintain cold chain. Choose gel or phase-change packs or refrigerated LTL; if using dry ice, follow DOT and carrier rules – the fluid is non-hazardous, the refrigerant may not be.
- Plan transit to avoid weekend holds. For multiple boxes, palletize tightly, shrink wrap, avoid overhang, and add Do Not Stack cones if sensitivity requires.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costing with fixed Class 85 (no density needed), speeding quotes and reducing reclass disputes.
- Non-hazardous NMFC status avoids hazmat surcharges and opens access to more LTL carriers.
- Inner-container boxed packaging lowers leak risk and claims, protecting sample integrity and brand trust.
- Consolidate multiple inner containers per box to optimize space and lower per-sample shipping cost.
