How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack in leakproof inner HDPE bottles or jerricans, place in a strong corrugated box with liners and absorbent pads to control odor and contain any seepage.
- Palletize boxes upright, add corner boards and stretch wrap, and mark This Side Up and Liquid Inside to discourage inverted handling during LTL moves.
- Declare NMFC 58840, Class 70 on the BOL; include piece count and total weight, and attach an SDS or product spec sheet if required by the consignee.
- Avoid temperature extremes per supplier guidance and choose minimal-transfer LTL service when shipping sensitive biological liquids to reduce agitation and leaks.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Single Class 70 listing streamlines rating and quoting—no density breaks or complex sub-classes to manage.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat surcharges and opens more carrier options, lowering landed cost.
- Boxed packouts cube efficiently on pallets, improving trailer utilization and reducing space-driven charges.
- Clear, consistent classification reduces reclass disputes and claims risk for processors, labs, and specialty suppliers.
