How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 58880, Class 70 on the BOL and mark the freight as non-hazardous. Add “Glass” and “This Side Up” labels to reduce mishandling.
- Pack glass containers in strong corrugated boxes with cell dividers, corner protection, and ample cushioning. Line each inner pack with a sealed poly bag and absorbent pads to contain leaks.
- Unitize cartons on a flush wooden pallet with corner boards and stretch wrap; strap if possible. Avoid overhang and request no-top-stack or cap-load when shipping with heavier freight.
- For medical supply chains (e.g., ostomy and skin barrier use), include lot and expiration details on paperwork, and schedule delivery appointments or liftgate service for clinics.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 rating enables predictable LTL quotes and fewer reclass fees, improving budget accuracy for recurring medical shipments.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat surcharges and complex compliance steps, speeding up tendering and transit.
- Defined “glass in boxes” packaging expectations reduce damage risk and OS&D claims, lowering total landed cost.
- Consistent classification supports reliable replenishment for healthcare providers, protecting product integrity and patient supply continuity.
