How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the commodity on the BOL as “Kits, fingernail maintenance, in boxes, with or without display racks, NMFC 58893, Class 250.” This reduces reclass risk.
- Use sturdy corrugated cartons with dividers for tools and accessories. Bag small items and cap sharp tips to prevent punctures during LTL handling.
- If shipping store display racks or stands in the same box, immobilize with foam or blocking and add ‘This Side Up’ labels to avoid scuffing and bent parts.
- Palletize cartons with no overhang and heavy-to-light stacking. Class is fixed, but provide accurate piece count, dimensions, and weight for quoting and space planning.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 250 simplifies rating and prevents density disputes, cutting back-office time and unexpected inspection charges.
- Non-hazardous designation avoids hazmat fees and special handling, accelerating tendering and delivery to beauty and pharmacy retailers.
- Displays included at the same classification let you bundle kits and stands under one NMFC line, streamlining paperwork and minimizing reclass events.
- Clear labeling and correct NMFC on the BOL strengthen claims defensibility and reduce delays for seasonal or promo-driven retail launches.
