How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State “whole medicinal roots, not ground or powdered” on the BOL to avoid powder misclassification and billing disputes.
- Choose packaging by firmness: poly-lined sacks for sturdy roots; double-wall cartons or small wood crates for brittle pieces. Add moisture barriers and pest-free documentation when required.
- Palletize to prevent crushing and allow airflow: use corner boards and banding, place heavy items low, and avoid over-tight shrink wrap that traps moisture.
- Include lot numbers, origin, and intended use (pharma, nutraceutical, personal care) on paperwork, and note non-hazardous botanical to speed carrier screening.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Non-hazardous status removes hazmat surcharges and simplifies pickup scheduling.
- Clear NMFC 59140 identification reduces reclass/rebill risk, stabilizing quoted LTL rates.
- Right-size packaging cuts breakage and dust leakage, lowering damage claims and product loss.
- Explicit “not ground” labeling avoids powder-related security delays and keeps transit times predictable.
