Note 59371: NOTE-Applies only on hemodialysis or saline solutions whose water content is 90 percent or greater by weight.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the product is non-intravenous fluid (e.g., dialysate concentrates or irrigation-grade saline) and identify whether you’re using drums or inner containers in boxes before rating.
- For inner containers in boxes, use leakproof bottles or jugs, line cartons with poly bags or absorbent pads, and choose double-wall boxes marked “Liquid” and “This Side Up.”
- For drums, select tight-head, bung-sealed drums, add drum rings or pallets, and block and brace to prevent rolling; note total count and weight on the BOL.
- Declare NMFC 59370, Class 55 on the bill of lading; list product name (e.g., 0.9% saline, bicarbonate concentrate), packaging type, and lot/expiry if required by consignee.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 55 rating streamlines quoting and reduces reclass disputes for medical liquid freight.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and expands carrier options, cutting transit restrictions and cost.
- Clear packaging paths—drums or boxed inner containers—support consolidation and pallet efficiency, lowering per-pound rates.
- Accurate NMFC mapping improves TMS automation, speeds approvals with distributors and clinics, and helps keep damage claims down.
