How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote and document as: NMFC 60120, Class 70, Packages—Rubber Pneumatic Dunnage (Deflated). No density needed; list piece count and pallet dimensions for planning.
- Palletize cartons or bundles, orient inflation valves inward, add cornerboards, and stretch-wrap tightly. Keep stack height at or below 48 inches to prevent crush.
- Isolate from sharp-edged or solvent-heavy freight to protect rubber. Use slip sheets or corrugated layers between pallets to minimize abrasion during cross-dock moves.
- Store and ship away from heat, ozone, and UV sources to preserve elastomer integrity. Example: 40x48 pallet, 12 cartons, 36 in tall, labeled “Deflated Air Dunnage.”
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 simplifies rating and prevents costly reclass fees or delays.
- Deflated packaging maximizes cube efficiency, lowering LTL cost per unit and improving trailer utilization.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and speeds carrier acceptance and tendering.
- Clear NMFC mapping reduces claims risk for valves and bag material and accelerates dock throughput.
