How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bolt the iron base to a 4‑way hardwood pallet using the mounting holes, add wood blocking, and apply steel banding with edge protectors to prevent movement.
- Crate odd-shaped bases or those with sharp edges; leave forklift access, mark center of gravity, and add Do Not Stack cones when the base shape is uneven.
- Protect machined pads and surfaces with VCI paper and oil wrap, cap exposed threads, then cover with heavy poly and corrugated to prevent rust and abrasion.
- On the BOL, describe as “Iron generator/motor base, NMFC 60660, non-hazardous,” include exact weight and dimensions, and attach packaging photos for claims support.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Avoid reclass and dispute charges by citing NMFC 60660 for iron bases, even when the class is not fixed.
- Reduce damage and downtime with rigid bolting, blocking, and rust protection that keep heavy bases stable in LTL cross-docks.
- Improve quote consistency and leverage density-based pricing by providing precise weight and dimensions for these compact, high-density parts.
- Speed MRO and OEM shipments by using clear descriptions and non-hazardous status, lowering exceptions and accelerating carrier acceptance.
