Note 6087: NOTE-The weight of hand agricultural implements or hand tools other than agricultural implements classed Class 85 or higher must not exceed 10 percent of weight upon which charges are assessed.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select NMFC 6085 for boxed assortments that include hand agricultural implements plus shovels, spades, or scoops made of steel or steel-and-wood.
- Pack blades with edge guards and pad handle ends; use sturdy cartons so tool tips don’t punch through during LTL cross-dock handling.
- List each carton count and weight on the BOL; class is fixed at 77.5, but carriers still need quantities and weights for rating and capacity planning.
- Review NMFC Note, item 6087 for scope or exceptions, and don’t use 6085 for single loose tools or powered equipment, which rate under different items.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 77.5 reduces reclass fees and invoice disputes for mixed tool kits.
- Boxed assortments consolidate many small tools into fewer handling units, cutting accessorial risk and dock time.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and speeds routing in seasonal ag peaks.
- Mixed-material allowance (steel or steel-and-wood) keeps one class on the BOL, simplifying pricing and audits.
