How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Print NMFC 6100 and Class 70 on the BOL, list packaging as boxes, and note “sharp edges protected” for carrier handling.
- Nest blades flat with edge guards or cardboard sheaths; bundle tightly, then load into double-wall cartons with kraft paper or foam to prevent chipping.
- For longer blades, alternate tips heel-to-toe and add corrugated end caps to avoid carton punctures and keep a square, stackable box.
- Palletize cartons with blades aligned to the pallet deck; add corner boards and two straps, and label boxes “Do Not Crush” and “Sharp Contents.”
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 70—no density disputes or surprise reclass fees.
- Faster quoting and TMS setup using a single NMFC for boxed scythe blades.
- Reduced damage risk from proper boxed packaging, lowering claims and seasonal downtime.
- Broad carrier acceptance as non-hazardous farm hardware, unlocking competitive LTL rates.
