How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Package heavy gear-motors on 48x40 pallets with blocked shafts and edge-protected straps; add “Keep Upright” arrows for oil-filled gearboxes that have been drained.
- For parts (housings, reducers, windings), use dense foam or molded trays inside double-wall cartons; wrap steel with VCI paper to prevent rust in transit.
- Label the BOL as “Gear-Motor or Parts, NOI — NMFC 62070” and list each unit’s weight, dimensions, and piece count to avoid reweigh/reclass fees.
- Cap electrical leads and ports, drain lubricants, and bag the unit before crating when exporting; example: a 62 lb reducer boxed and banded to a skid with 1-inch blocking.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Minimizes damage claims by stabilizing high center-of-gravity motors and protecting exposed shafts and couplings.
- Speeds quotes and pickups by using a unified NOI listing (NMFC 62070) across mixed gear-motor assemblies and parts.
- Reduces accessorials and rework through right-sized pallets, accurate weights, and clearly marked orientation labels.
- Optimizes LTL costs by consolidating small parts into compartmentalized cartons, preventing loss and detention during inspections.
