How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm the unit is a combined generator and engine assembly and reference Note 62125; include fuel type, kW rating, and whether it’s open-frame or enclosed.
  2. Drain fuel and coolant, disconnect the battery, cap lines, and protect control panels and radiators before crating or palletizing the entire unit.
  3. Mount the genset on a heavy skid with blocking and vibration-damping pads; band and shrink-wrap, and mark center of gravity and lift points.
  4. Provide total dimensions and weight of the assembled package (skid included) and note access needs like liftgate, forklift pockets, or overhead lift.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate NOI use with Note 62125 reduces reclass/reweigh fees and speeds LTL quotes.
  • Non-hazardous status avoids HazMat surcharges and broadens carrier options.
  • Proper crating and vibration control cut damage risk, claims, and downtime for critical power assets.
  • Clear specs (kW, enclosure, packaging) enable better carrier selection and predictable freight rates.
