Notes
Note 62102: NOTE-Applies only when switchboards consist of an assembly of circuit protection or monitoring devices to control the distribution of electrical energy produced by the generator.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the unit is a combined generator, engine, and switchboard assembly; include any cooling tank whether attached or detached to qualify under NMFC 62100.
- Use rigid boxes or fully enclosed crates with internal blocking and bracing; strap the frame, lock moving parts, and secure switchgear doors and breakers.
- If the gross weight approaches 4,000 lb or more, plan for heavy-duty skidding and 4-way forklift access; mark center of gravity and lift points clearly.
- On paperwork, state NMFC 62100, Class 85, packaging type (box/crate), and total weight. Dimensions aren’t required for classing but add them for accurate rate quotes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: fixed Class 85 simplifies quoting and reduces reclass risk on complex generator-engine-switchboard shipments.
- Non-hazardous designation streamlines booking and avoids hazmat surcharges, speeding up tender and pickup.
- Proper crating and securement minimize in-transit damage, protecting costly electrical assemblies and preventing project downtime.
- Weight-based classification supports consistent LTL pricing and easier mode decisions when units approach volume or truckload thresholds.
