Notes
Note 62652: NOTE-Applies on parts for semiconductors named in item 63025.
Note 62654: NOTE-The released value must be entered on the shipping order and bill of lading in the following manner: "The agreed or released value of the property is hereby specifically stated by the shipper to be not exceeding ______ per pound." When the foregoing statements are properly executed, the rates subject hereto will take precedence over all other rates not subject to released value, provided the released rates result in lower freight charges. If lower freight charges do not result, the release will be deemed not to have been executed and the rates subject hereto will have no application. If the shipper fails or declines to execute the above statements, or designates a value exceeding $1.50 per pound, shipments will not be accepted for transportation at the rates subject hereto. Rates based on other classes in this Classification will apply in such a case. Classes herein based on released value have been authorized by the Interstate Commerce Commission in Released Rates Order No. MC-719 of November 29, 1967.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Declare the released value on the BOL at or below $1.50 per lb to keep Class 85. If value exceeds the cap, reference related items 62652 or 62654.
- Use ESD-safe inner packaging (shielding bags, trays/reels, moisture barrier with desiccant), then place inside snug, double-wall corrugated boxes with foam or bubble cushioning.
- Palletize boxes with no overhang, add corner boards, stretch-wrap top to bottom, and strap twice. Keep stacks conservative to prevent compression damage.
- Add cargo insurance beyond carrier liability due to the released value limit. Avoid mixed commodities in the same box and document part counts for clean claims.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 85 rating enables accurate LTL quotes and cleaner freight audits.
- Released value structure can reduce base rates; supplement with third-party insurance to protect high-dollar components.
- Non-hazardous status speeds tendering and cuts compliance overhead across lanes.
- Boxes-only packaging standardizes handling, reduces OS&D risk, and helps prevent costly reclass or inspection fees.
