How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Palletize the SU unit and strap with poly or fiber bands so hardware doesn’t touch insulated surfaces; add edge protectors and full stretch wrap to prevent scuffs.
- Keep insulation dry and clean: bag in poly or use a cover, add desiccant if moving through humid lanes, and specify dry van service to protect dielectric properties.
- Mark cartons and pallets: “Insulated Platform – Do Not Puncture,” orientation arrows, and “Top Load Only” if applicable; put NMFC 62720, Class 100 on the BOL to avoid reclass.
- Share exact outside dimensions and weight with your carrier for accurate LTL pricing and capacity planning, even though the class is fixed and not density-based.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 simplifies quoting and budgeting—no density calculation, faster rate discovery, and fewer surprises.
- Accurate SU description reduces reclass fees and billing disputes, improving claim outcomes and cash flow predictability.
- Proper packing preserves insulating surfaces, cutting damage risk and downtime for electrical crews relying on ready-to-use platforms.
- Aligned with Electrical Equipment Group standards, enabling smoother cross-dock handling and consistent transit performance for MRO and project shipments.
