How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify your item is an NOI cathode ray tube (X-ray or transmitting type) and consult Note, item 63477 to choose the correct class within 110–150.
  2. Select protective packaging: double-wall box with custom foam for small tubes, or a wood crate with internal blocking and 360° clearance for heavier bulbs and anodes.
  3. Mark orientation and fragility clearly: use “This End Up,” shock/vibration indicators, and non-stack labels; secure to a pallet to prevent fork strikes.
  4. List NMFC 63473 and the chosen class on the BOL; include photos of packaging and insure high-value tubes to streamline claims if damage occurs.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate class selection (110–150) reduces reclass fees and dispute delays on fragile vacuum glass shipments.
  • Purpose-built boxes or crates cut breakage risk, protecting costly X-ray and transmitter tubes and minimizing downtime for hospitals, labs, and broadcasters.
  • Clear labeling and palletization improve carrier handling, lowering accessorials and speeding cross-dock transfers.
  • Following Note 63477 guidance helps carriers accept the freight without exceptions, leading to faster pickup and predictable transit.
