Notes

Note 63561: NOTE-Shipper must certify on shipping orders and bills of lading at time of shipment the actual value per pound of the property or the value group embracing the actual value per pound of the property. If the shipper fails to so certify the actual value, shipment will not be accepted, but if the shipment is inadvertently accepted, charges will initially be assessed on the basis of the class for the highest valuation provided. Upon proof of lower actual value, freight charges will be adjusted accordingly.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Stabilize moving parts before packing: lock tube arms, secure the gantry, and remove detachable panels or consoles; block and brace each piece to prevent vibration damage.
  2. Use double-wall cartons only for compact tabletop units; larger floor models or C-arms should ship in custom wood crates with foam-in-place and a 4-way pallet base.
  3. Add handling cues—center-of-gravity labels, Tip-N-Tell and ShockWatch indicators—and mark Do Not Stack; choose air-ride service to reduce shock during transit.
  4. On the BOL, describe as “X-ray machines, boxed/crated – non-hazardous electrical equipment”; include accurate dims/weight and request liftgate or inside pickup if rigging is needed.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Clear NMFC reference and precise descriptions minimize reclass/reweigh disputes, cutting unexpected fees and speeding carrier acceptance.
  • Purpose-built crating and blocking materially lower damage risk to sensitive tubes and detectors, reducing claims and insurance friction.
  • Right-size packaging (box vs crate) aligns freight handling with equipment fragility, improving terminal throughput and shortening dwell time.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and lanes, enabling competitive LTL rates and faster booking without special approvals.
