How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State the commodity clearly on the BOL: “Evergreens, decorative, cut, NOI (not wreaths or sprays).” This avoids misclassification with designed pieces.
- Use breathable cartons or bundled boughs on pallets with moisture liners; strap or net-wrap instead of tight shrink to prevent heat and needle loss.
- Palletize on 48x40 with corner boards; keep heights 48–60 inches, mark Do Not Top Load, and protect tops with slip sheets to prevent crushing.
- Plan early-week pickups to dodge weekend layovers; request temp-control or insulated liners when heat or freezing risks exist during transit.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NOI labeling reduces inspections and costly reclass or rebill fees.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier selection and removes hazmat surcharges.
- Ventilated, moisture-managed packing cuts damage claims from wilt, sap, and needle drop.
- Palletized bundles speed cross-dock handling, improving on-time performance in peak seasons.
