Notes

Note 64301: NOTE-Applies on articles or materials regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as a Hazard Class 1, Division 1.1, 1.2 or 1.3, Explosives, as defined in 49 CFR 173.50 and required to bear a notice to that effect on bills of lading and packaging.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm the exact article and division (ammo, fireworks, detonators, propellants) and use U.S. DOT‑authorized UN packaging; add inner cushioning and close boxes per the package test report.
  2. Prepare hazmat paperwork: Proper Shipping Name, UN/NA number, class/division and compatibility group, any required EX numbers, and a 24‑hour emergency phone; mirror data on the BOL.
  3. Mark and label correctly: apply Class 1 labels with the right division (e.g., 1.4G or 1.4S), use Limited Quantity marks when eligible, and segregate from heat, sparks, and initiators.
  4. Book with approved carriers only; many LTLs restrict explosives. Obtain pre‑approval, note pickup from a licensed magazine if used, and check state or seasonal fireworks embargoes.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate placement within the Class 85–200 band prevents reclass fees and surprise hazmat surcharges, improving rate predictability.
  • DOT‑compliant packaging and documentation reduce refusals, delays, and claims, cutting total landed cost and safeguarding service levels.
  • Pre‑screening carriers for explosive authority and lanes shortens transit and avoids costly storage, diversions, or tender rejections.
  • Leveraging eligible exceptions for certain small arms cartridges or igniters can lower effective class or fees, trimming accessorial spend.
