How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Describe the commodity clearly on the BOL as non-hazardous extracts and note whether it is water- or oil-based; include product specs or an SDS/TDS if available.
- Select leak-tight packaging: HDPE bottles with induction seals or lined pails; add inner poly liners and absorbent pads inside cartons to contain any seepage.
- Palletize with dividers and corner boards, avoid overhang, and cap pallets with stretch wrap; mark arrows and any temperature notes like Keep From Freezing.
- Because class is N/A, provide precise piece counts, dimensions, and weights along with the extract type so carriers can assign a rating quickly for LTL quotes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Leak-resistant packaging reduces spill claims and related chargebacks.
- Clear, complete commodity details speed carrier rating and cut reclass fees.
- Standardized pack sizes and pallet footprints improve cube utilization and freight rates.
- Consolidating smaller bottles into pails or full pallets lowers handling and accessorial risk.
