How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Print NMFC 64510 and Class 85 on the BOL and pallet labels; this is a fixed-class listing, so no density calculation is needed.
- Palletize sealed drums upright and band them to the skid; for example, four 55‑gal fiber drums on a 48×48 pallet with corner boards and stretch wrap.
- Isolate loads from odor-heavy freight (soaps, chemicals) and request clean, odor-free equipment; add desiccant to protect tobacco from moisture.
- Quote with exact drum details—material (steel vs. fiber), gallon size, and count—to match carrier handling rules and avoid surprise accessorials.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 85 minimizes reclass disputes and avoids density-based rating swings.
- Lower claims risk: rugged drum packaging reduces crush, puncture, and spill exposure during LTL handling.
- Broader carrier access: non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat surcharges and eases paperwork.
- Faster rating and scheduling: clearly listing NMFC 64510 speeds quotes, pickups, and terminal processing.
