How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Print the BOL as: “Cages/Coops/Crates, animal or poultry, steel or steel-and-wood, KD, in packages – NMFC 64830, Class 85.” This prevents reclass issues.
- Flat-pack panels and frames on a sturdy 4‑way pallet. Band securely, add corner/edge guards for wire mesh, bag all hardware inside the package, and wrap for containment.
- Use package or crate-style outer protection for KD sets. Clearly mark “KD – Knocked Down” and apply orientation arrows if doors or nest boxes are preinstalled.
- Do not treat live‑animal transport crates or general shipping crates as this item. Those use different NMFCs; this listing covers farm-use enclosures only.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 simplifies rating and quoting across carriers, cutting time spent on density calculations.
- KD packaging reduces cube and damage risk, often lowering LTL charges compared to assembled units.
- Accurate NMFC 64830 on paperwork minimizes inspections, reclass fees, and delivery disputes.
- Consistent classification supports dealers and poultry operations with predictable budgeting and multi-stop consolidation.
