How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle KD wire panels and frames with corner protectors and interleaving sheets to stop mesh-to-mesh abrasion, then band securely to a pallet without overhang.
- Separate and box small parts (clips, feeders, drinkers, fasteners). Label: “KD poultry cages — hardware enclosed” to prevent loss and simplify piece counts.
- Choose palletization for LTL handling; keep stacks low enough to avoid bending (e.g., under 48 in). Use fiberboard caps and stretch wrap plus strapping for containment.
- Mirror the NMFC on the BOL: “Cages, poultry laying, wire or wire-and-steel, KD, in packages — NMFC 64840 — Class 100.” Add “Do Not Stack” cones if frames deform under load.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with a fixed Class 100 rating—no density calculations, faster quotes, and fewer rating disputes.
- Lower reclass and damage claims by matching the exact KD-in-packages description and using edge protection and part boxing.
- KD packaging increases trailer cube efficiency, enabling more cage sets per shipment and reducing per-unit freight cost.
- Cleaner dock workflows and shorter dwell times: clearly labeled bundles and boxed hardware speed receiving at farms and distributors.
