How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Document features that affect handling—integral scale, wheel kit, headgate type—and measure overall footprint, including protruding handles and tires.
- Protect integral scales during transit: engage transport locks or remove/load-cell feet per manufacturer guidance, and pad indicators and cables.
- Package for lift-truck handling: set the chute on a heavy pallet or skid, block and brace under frame rails, then band with edge protectors; crate knockdown panels separately.
- Mark lift points and center of gravity so carriers avoid grabbing from side panels; request long forks or a boom attachment when the chute exceeds standard fork reach.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Using NMFC 65120 aligns your shipment with farm equipment norms, reducing reclass disputes and surprise adjustments.
- Proper blocking, bracing, and scale protection cuts damage claims and keeps equipment field-ready for ranch operations or sale-day setups.
- Shipping knockdown or removing wheel kits can shorten length and lower cubic footprint, improving LTL rates and trailer fit.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and carrier acceptance, helping loads move faster through terminals and rural delivery routes.
