How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Apply NMFC 65160 at Class 125 for egg candlers or testers. Use boxes for handheld units; crate bench-top testers with solid internal blocking.
- Cushion fragile bulbs, LED modules, and optics with dense foam or honeycomb. Bag and secure cords and spare lamps to prevent rubbing during transit.
- Label cartons Fragile and This Side Up. For crates, add 4‑way entry skids and steel banding to resist tip-overs on docks and conveyors.
- Ship only the equipment—no eggs or liquids. If a unit is battery-powered, remove loose batteries or follow carrier battery declaration rules.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 125 removes density debates, cutting reclass fees and stabilizing LTL quotes.
- Clear packaging paths (boxes or crates) reduce claim risk for delicate optical/electrical components.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines booking and avoids hazmat surcharges for farms, hatcheries, and QA labs.
- Consistent Farm Equipment Group coding improves audit accuracy and budgeting across carriers and lanes.
