Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
65300.00 Feeders, livestock or poultry, including Salt Holders, with or without conveyors or troughs:

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Palletize rigidly: choose a pallet at least the feeder’s footprint, add blocking under legs, strap in two directions, and use edge protectors on trough rims.
  2. Secure conveyor parts: remove motors, guards, or auger drives from combo feeders and box them separately, or band to the frame with padding to prevent vibration damage.
  3. Match wrap to material: cover galvanized steel with corrosion-inhibiting wrap, shrink-wrap plastic/poly feeders to prevent scuffing, and carton small salt holders to stop rattling.
  4. Mark orientation and hardware: label “This Side Up” for trough styles, bag nuts, hangers, and lids, and attach a packing list to the outside of the crate or pallet.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate NMFC mapping for feeders reduces reclass fees and surprise adjustments, improving rate predictability on LTL moves.
  • Damage prevention to rims, hoppers, and conveyor housings cuts returns and service calls, keeping farm operations running and lowering total landed cost.
  • Smart nesting and bundling of smaller poultry feeders and salt holders trims cube, improving density and securing more favorable freight rates where applicable.
  • Non-hazardous classification simplifies paperwork and pickup scheduling, speeding tender-to-transit and avoiding hazmat surcharges.
