How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Drain oil reservoirs, cap ports, and wipe residue; remove brushes/wicks and loose guards so the frame ships dry and clean.
- Nest or band units to a hardwood pallet; pad contact points and use edge protectors on iron uprights to avoid punctures and bent bars.
- Crate tall oilers or brace with 2x4 blocking to prevent tip-over; mark lift points and center of gravity on the exterior.
- Write NMFC 65500 and full description on the BOL (iron or iron-and-wood oiler/greaser), include photos and weight to speed LTL quotes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Cleaner, drained units expand carrier acceptance and avoid haz-mat confusion, keeping pickups on schedule.
- Proper palletizing and bracing cut reclass and damage risk, reducing surprise fees from bent frames or oil seepage.
- Disassembling wood skirts or removable arms can reduce cube so two units fit a single skid, lowering cost per unit.
- Clear NMFC labeling (65500) streamlines rating across carriers and enables faster, more accurate farm equipment rate shopping.
