How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select packaging per listing: use a sturdy double-wall box with foam cradles or a small crate with cross-bracing; immobilize the thermostat and heating element.
- Palletize boxed or crated incubators, add edge protectors under straps, stretch-wrap tightly, and use Do Not Stack cones to prevent plastic shell deformation.
- Complete the BOL with NMFC 65570 and the description “Incubators, poultry, still-air, plastic,” noting package type (box or crate) for clean audits and rating.
- Guard electronics from moisture and shocks: poly-bag with desiccant, add shock/tilt indicators, and keep orientation arrows upright during pickup and delivery.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Faster pricing: fixed Class 300 eliminates density calculations, streamlining TMS rating and carrier quotes.
- Reduced accessorials and disputes: correct NMFC on the BOL minimizes reclass, inspections, and delay fees.
- Lower claim risk: crates or reinforced cartons protect brittle plastic housings and sensitive thermostats.
- Cost control strategies: consolidate units on a pallet and leverage volume LTL or FAK to offset high-class rates.
