How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Ship only when pails are nested and packaged as bundles. Add paper or corrugated sleeves between pails to prevent metal-on-metal scuffing; 8–12 per package is common.
- Unitize on a 48x40 pallet with handles oriented inward to avoid protrusions. Use a top cap, stretch wrap, and two plastic bands; add corner boards if stacks are tall.
- Print the BOL with: NMFC 65640, Class 85, “Pails, calf feeder, metal, nested, in packages.” Include piece counts per bundle and total pallet count for quick carrier check-in.
- Protect from moisture in transit. Use poly sheeting or VCI paper if storage is humid, and mark reasonable stack limits to avoid rim distortion.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 simplifies rating and minimizes reclass exposure, improving quote accuracy for farm supply distributors and dairy equipment sellers.
- Nesting drastically reduces cube, cutting LTL freight charges while keeping larger releases consolidated for smoother deliveries.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines pickup scheduling and terminal handling, reducing delays and extra paperwork.
- Better protection practices (sleeves, banding, top caps) lower damage ratios and claims, strengthening vendor scorecards and customer satisfaction.
