How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Ship pens as knock-down components inside sturdy boxes or wooden crates; bundle rails and posts, and bag all hardware so nothing shifts or punctures packaging.
- Add blocking and inner bracing to keep long rails from bowing; use edge protectors and banding so boxes or crates can be stacked flat without crushing.
- Mark each piece count and the heaviest lift point on the crate; include assembly instructions and a packing list for ranch hands or fair staff at delivery.
- Book LTL at Class 70 and request non-stack if crates extend beyond pallet; avoid mixing metal gates or assembled panels that could alter classification.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 70 rating provides predictable LTL pricing for seasonal ranch, 4-H, and fair shipments.
- Knock-down packaging reduces cube and damage risk, lowering accessorials and claims costs.
- Boxed or crated format simplifies cross-dock handling, speeding transfers during peak livestock events.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and shortens tender-to-pickup timelines.
