How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the item as “steel feed racks, SU” on the BOL and include full outer dimensions and weight for each rack or unitized bundle to align with NMFC 65730.
- Unitize assembled racks on a rigid skid with 4 in forklift clearance; add corner guards, cap sharp tube ends, and use two-way steel banding plus stretch wrap to prevent rub-through.
- Mark lift points and preferred fork side; keep center of gravity low by securing bases to the skid and apply “Do Not Stack” and “Fork From Long Side” labels if applicable.
- Plan delivery: ranches and farms often require limited-access and liftgate service. When possible, ship to a dealer or cross-dock to avoid accessorials and simplify unloading.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate SU designation and clear dimensions reduce reclass, reweigh, and detention fees tied to bulky agricultural frames.
- Proper bracing and edge protection prevent bent rails and weld damage, cutting claim rates and avoiding costly rework in the field.
- Dealer consolidation or terminal pickup can eliminate residential and limited-access surcharges, lowering per-unit freight costs.
- Selecting carriers experienced with farm equipment minimizes non-stackable and oversize handling fees and improves on-time performance.
