How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate density to set the class: weigh the boxed feeder or house, measure L×W×H in inches, convert to cubic feet (÷1728), then weight ÷ cubic feet. Example: 18×12×10 in at 14 lb ≈ 1.25 cu ft → 11.2 pcf; higher density usually yields a lower class within 50–400.
- Pack to NMFC Item 170: use sturdy corrugated cartons, cushion perches and roofs, bag and secure screws or mounts so they can’t rattle, and fill voids to prevent crushing.
- Protect fragile features: glass seed tubes, acrylic windows, and decorative roofs need inner boxing or edge protection; mark orientation but assume six‑side handling in LTL.
- Document clearly on the BOL: “Bird Feeder/House—Boxed,” include dimensions and scale weight, and note non‑hazmat status to reduce reclass risk and speed inspections.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Reduce freight spend by optimizing carton size and packing density so shipments land in lower classes when possible.
- Non‑hazardous commodity means simpler paperwork and no hazmat accessorials, improving transit speed and predictability.
- Accurate density data and NMFC 67900 coding lower the chance of reclassifications, inspection fees, and billing disputes.
- Damage‑resistant packaging for delicate feeders and houses cuts claim rates, preserving margins and customer satisfaction.
