How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the commodity fits: non-plastic fencing, fence gates, or steel-and-wire partitions/partition doors. Plastic fencing belongs under a different NMFC.
- Calculate density to set the freight class. Use weight ÷ (L×W×H ÷ 1728). Example: 700 lb on a 96×40×42 in pallet ≈ 7.5 pcf (class varies by carrier charts).
- Package per Item 170: bundle panels, protect sharp ends with caps, add edge guards, and band to a pallet. Bag hinges/latches and secure them inside the package.
- Mark paperwork with “NMFC 68025, steel and wire combined, packaged.” Include total weight, piece count, and outside dimensions for each package to avoid reclass.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct density-based classing reduces reclass fees and unexpected accessorials, keeping LTL quotes accurate for bulky fencing and gate shipments.
- Item 170-compliant packaging lowers claims risk by shielding sharp edges and mesh ends, improving carrier handling and minimizing damage costs.
- Consolidating panels into uniform palletized packages optimizes cube, improving cost per hundredweight and enabling more competitive freight rates.
- Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier options and speeds tendering, helping projects stay on schedule with reliable transit performance.
