How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify the commodity fits: non-plastic fencing, fence gates, or steel-and-wire partitions/partition doors. Plastic fencing belongs under a different NMFC.
  2. Calculate density to set the freight class. Use weight ÷ (L×W×H ÷ 1728). Example: 700 lb on a 96×40×42 in pallet ≈ 7.5 pcf (class varies by carrier charts).
  3. Package per Item 170: bundle panels, protect sharp ends with caps, add edge guards, and band to a pallet. Bag hinges/latches and secure them inside the package.
  4. Mark paperwork with “NMFC 68025, steel and wire combined, packaged.” Include total weight, piece count, and outside dimensions for each package to avoid reclass.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Correct density-based classing reduces reclass fees and unexpected accessorials, keeping LTL quotes accurate for bulky fencing and gate shipments.
  • Item 170-compliant packaging lowers claims risk by shielding sharp edges and mesh ends, improving carrier handling and minimizing damage costs.
  • Consolidating panels into uniform palletized packages optimizes cube, improving cost per hundredweight and enabling more competitive freight rates.
  • Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier options and speeds tendering, helping projects stay on schedule with reliable transit performance.
