How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Enter NMFC 68043, Class 85 on the BOL and describe as “Electric fence equipment kits, boxed”; do not split kit components into separate line items.
- Pack in sturdy boxes with dividers or foam to isolate steel fixtures, lightning arrestors, testers, and insulators; cover sharp sheet‑metal sign edges to prevent carton punctures.
- Coil insulated copper wire on a spool or figure‑eight wrap, tape the ends, and bag small parts (insulators, handles) so nothing migrates during transit.
- If a store display stand is included, bundle flat panels and hardware, add corner/edge protection, and immobilize with void fill for LTL cross‑dock handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing at Class 85 eliminates density calculations, speeding quotes and tendering.
- Single NMFC for mixed materials (steel, copper, composites) cuts reclass disputes and accessorial surprises.
- Boxed-only packaging aligns with carrier process flows, reducing damage risk and claim costs.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier selection and helps maintain faster transit options.
