How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Declare “steel fence wickets, 3/16 in or heavier” on the BOL and note coating status (plastic-coated or bare) to align with NMFC 68065 in packages.
- Bundle and strap wickets tightly with edge protectors; palletize to a stable 48x40 or larger skid so no ends protrude like spears.
- Prevent scuffs on plastic-coated product by using sleeve guards under banding and adding a slip sheet; avoid top-stacking to prevent bends.
- For heavy bundles (e.g., a 500 lb pack), center the weight on the pallet, label lift points, and instruct carriers to use forks under the skid—not through the wire.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 60 pricing reduces rating surprises and simplifies LTL quotes for fencing projects.
- Clear, item-specific description minimizes reclass fees and cuts OS&D risk on heavy-gauge wire bundles.
- Packaging in standardized bundles speeds dock handling, lowering accessorials and cycle time to job sites.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier acceptance and broadens routing options during peak season.
