How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 68880 and Class 85 on the BOL, and attach the current SDS plus any required hazmat declaration with applicable UN/NA identification.
- Pack the filler inside rated corrugated boxes; line with a sealed inner bag and use absorbent or cushioning as needed to prevent leaks and abrasion.
- Palletize with no overhang, then strap and stretch-wrap; apply hazmat labels and orientation or limited-quantity marks if regulations call for them.
- If product arrives in bags from the supplier, place those bags into boxes to match this classification and avoid reclass or refusal.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Locked-in Class 85 eliminates density disputes, cutting reweigh and reclass fees.
- Boxed-only packaging standard reduces damage risk and claim exposure for chemical fillers.
- Clear hazmat alignment speeds terminal handling and minimizes compliance delays and accessorials.
- Predictable rating helps pricing teams forecast LTL costs and negotiate better base rates.
