How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. List NMFC 68880 and Class 85 on the BOL, and attach the current SDS plus any required hazmat declaration with applicable UN/NA identification.
  2. Pack the filler inside rated corrugated boxes; line with a sealed inner bag and use absorbent or cushioning as needed to prevent leaks and abrasion.
  3. Palletize with no overhang, then strap and stretch-wrap; apply hazmat labels and orientation or limited-quantity marks if regulations call for them.
  4. If product arrives in bags from the supplier, place those bags into boxes to match this classification and avoid reclass or refusal.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Locked-in Class 85 eliminates density disputes, cutting reweigh and reclass fees.
  • Boxed-only packaging standard reduces damage risk and claim exposure for chemical fillers.
  • Clear hazmat alignment speeds terminal handling and minimizes compliance delays and accessorials.
  • Predictable rating helps pricing teams forecast LTL costs and negotiate better base rates.
