How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List “NMFC 68970, Class 65, non-hazardous” on the BOL and specify packaging as boxed rolls or sheets to avoid reclass or inspection delays.
- Use rigid double-wall cartons with edge protection; interleave sheets or secure reels with cores, add desiccant packs, and label “Do Not Bend/Keep Dry.”
- Palletize square to the deck with no overhang, apply corner boards and stretch-wrap, and reserve top layers for light freight to prevent crushing.
- Avoid heat, humidity, and chemical fumes during transit; choose dry vans and plan pickup to prevent weekend dwell that can curl or warp film.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 65 simplifies rating—no density dispute risk and fewer billing adjustments.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and minimizes compliance-related accessorials.
- Consistent boxed dimensions improve cube utilization and reduce damage claims for repro shops and archives.
- Accurate quoting speeds job turnaround for blueprint centers, service bureaus, and records teams handling duplicate film.
