How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Reference NMFC 69085 on the BOL and invoices to flag shipments as gas filters; this helps carriers apply the correct item rating when a class isn’t specified.
- Package cartridge elements in sealed poly bags, then double-wall cartons with dividers; cap or plug any threaded or quick-connect ports on housings to prevent damage.
- For heavy metal housings, use foam-lined cartons or a small wood crate on a pallet; band and shrink-wrap to keep units upright and prevent movement in transit.
- Mark cartons with orientation arrows and “Filter Elements—Gas” for quick identification; palletize in even layers and avoid overhang to reduce claim risk.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Clear NMFC referencing reduces reclass fees and surprise adjustments when carriers audit paperwork.
- Non-hazardous status keeps accessorials lower and streamlines tendering across most LTL networks.
- Protective packaging (caps, dividers, crates) cuts breakage and warranty claims on precision filter elements.
- Consistent labeling and palletizing speed dock handling, improving on-time performance and freight spend predictability.
