How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use NMFC 69095 on the BOL; describe as iron/steel liquid or gas filters—cartridge or tank type with fittings, not water filters—to prevent miscoding.
- Cap and plug all ports and threads; bag cartridges to keep media clean, cushion with foam, and secure tank units upright on a 4-way pallet with banding.
- Drain and wipe units before pickup; mark 'drained and dry'. If any residue remains, pad and contain to avoid leaks and accessorial clean-up charges.
- For quotes, list piece counts, net weight, and outer crate or pallet dimensions; class is item-based here, but carriers still price by size and weight.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Proper item coding reduces reclass fees and billing disputes, stabilizing LTL rates across lanes.
- Clear 'non-water filter' designation avoids misrating under different items and prevents unexpected accessorials.
- Thread and port protection cuts damage claims, keeping uptime for refineries, compressor skids, and hydraulic power units.
- Non-hazardous status widens carrier options and speeds transit, improving service SLAs without premium surcharges.
