Note 69106: NOTE- Applies on tanks for water filters, purifiers or softeners, with or without fittings, and with or without water filtering, purifying or softening material.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm if you’re moving complete systems or just iron/steel tanks; for tanks, review the related note (item 69106) before booking.
- Drain and dry tanks, remove resin/media cartridges and control valves, cap all openings; box valves with foam end-caps and bag cartridges to keep dust out.
- Palletize upright with saddles or blocking for round tanks, add edge protectors, and use two bands per position; apply do-not-stack cones for tall units.
- On the BOL, describe as “Water filters/purifiers/softeners, NOI — NMFC 69105, non-hazardous,” and include accurate piece count, pallet count, and dimensions to avoid reclass.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Proper NMFC use curbs reclass fees and disputes, stabilizing LTL rates for recurring water treatment shipments.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier choice and routing flexibility, accelerating deliveries to job sites and facilities.
- Damage-conscious packing protects delicate control heads and housings, lowering claims and preserving warranty coverage.
- Clear labeling and consistent pallet builds speed cross-dock handling, reducing delays and keeping construction timelines on track.
