How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm unit type and packaging: self‑propelled engine, trailer pump, or skid module, and note if packed in a box or a crate. Use NMFC 69260 and select the correct subclass within Class 150–200 per the NMFTA listing.
- Prepare for transport: drain fuel, disconnect batteries, and secure hoses/nozzles on powered units; cap fluid lines and protect protrusions on non‑powered modules. Immobilize wheels and tag controls.
- Crate or box with blocking and bracing: bolt skids to a timber base, add 4‑way forklift access, mark center of gravity, and use edge guards for ladders, pumps, or tanks to prevent punctures.
- Quote accurately: this item rates by fixed class (not density), but carriers still need total weight and outer crate/box dimensions. Add accessorials like liftgate or appointment if the site lacks dock access.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed class range (150–200) streamlines rating and reduces reclass disputes, helping you forecast LTL costs with fewer surprises.
- Non‑hazardous status widens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, improving service availability for emergency fleets and OEMs.
- Proper crating/boxing cuts damage risk on pumps, valves, and electronics, lowering claims and downtime for municipalities and contractors.
- Clear packaging and handling instructions speed pickups and avoid extra fees (redelivery, detention), improving total landed cost on replacement units.
