Notes

Note 69302: NOTE-Outer shipping containers may be printed or labeled with shipper's name and address but not printed or labeled with advertising or with uncoded information as to the nature, identity, model or caliber of the articles contained therein. Packing lists affixed to the outside of shipping container must be enclosed in a sealed, opaque envelope or pouch.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Use NMFC 69300 and Class 100 on the BOL, with the description “Firearms, NOI, in boxes; see Note item 69302.” Declare non-hazardous and list box count.
  2. Package each firearm unloaded in a rigid inner case or cradle, then place inside a strong corrugated box with foam, void fill, and edge protection; seal seams with the H-tape method.
  3. For multi-unit shipments, palletize the boxed cases, add corner boards, stretch wrap in 3–5 passes, and band to the pallet. Keep serial numbers recorded inside the carton, not on exterior labels.
  4. Confirm legal requirements and carrier policies: FFL-to-FFL when applicable, adult signature on delivery, no ammunition in the box, and align with Note 69302 before tendering.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 100 removes density debates, improving LTL rate predictability and budget forecasting.
  • Accurate “boxes” packaging and citing Note 69302 reduce reclass fees, inspections, and rebills.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier availability and speeds acceptance, trimming cycle times.
  • Proper boxing and palletizing cut damage and loss risk, reducing claims, downtime, and admin overhead.
