Note 69422: NOTE-Applies on the articles named, with or without log grates, gas logs, electric logs or heaters, mantels or other accessories in the same package.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate PCF to set class: measure the boxed or crated length × width × height (in inches), convert to cubic feet, then weight ÷ cu ft. Example: 380 lb ÷ 20 cu ft = 19 PCF.
- Choose packaging to match the item: crate heavy cast-iron grates or reinforced-concrete outdoor fireplaces; double-wall box and rigid foam for screens, dampers, and tool sets.
- Palletize correctly: center weight, block and brace, and add corner boards to protect frames and glass; strap crates/boxes and avoid overhang to prevent OS&D claims.
- Document clearly on the BOL: NMFC 69420, item description (e.g., gas logs, andirons, fireplace guard), packaging type, and density so carriers rate it right the first time.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Density-based rating can lower freight class for compact, heavy goods like cast-iron grates and concrete units, reducing LTL rates without compromising service.
- One NMFC for many fireplace accessories simplifies quoting and invoicing across SKUs—less reclass risk, fewer disputes, faster tendering.
- Right-size crating/boxing cuts damage and reweigh fees; optimized cube improves trailer utilization and helps you win sharper contracted tariffs.
- Non-hazardous designation expands carrier options and lanes, enabling competitive spot quotes during seasonal peaks for grills, screens, and gas/electric logs.
