How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Print NMFC 69950 and Class 70 on the BOL and labels, noting “Fish Net Preservative, NOI, liquid or paste, in drums or pails” to prevent reclass delays.
- Palletize drums upright, band and chock, and add a top cap; example: two 55-gallon steel drums on a 48x40 pallet with absorbent pad and stretch wrap.
- For 5-gallon pails, interlock lids, layer on a sheet, cornerboard the stack, and stretch wrap tightly to stop lid pop and shifting.
- Segregate from food items to avoid odor transfer and keep out of direct heat or sun to maintain preservative performance; include SDS to confirm non-haz status.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 gives predictable rating and budgeting with no density math or reweigh surprises.
- Non-hazardous classification avoids hazmat paperwork and surcharges, reducing accessorial cost exposure.
- Standard drums or pails speed terminal handling and lower OS&D risk, improving claim ratios.
- Accurate NMFC labeling minimizes inspections and reclass fees, enabling faster quotes and tendering.
