How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the commodity on the BOL as “Flasks, quicksilver, iron — empty” and add a note such as “no residual mercury” to avoid unnecessary hazmat handling.
- Bundle or crate flasks with separators; cap and protect threads, use VCI wrap to deter corrosion, then band to a pallet and block/brace for LTL motions.
- For returns of decontaminated flasks, include a cleaning/decon certificate and bag each piece to capture any metal dust; keep separate from food-grade freight.
- Provide accurate piece counts and pallet dimensions even with fixed Class 65, and only request accessorials (e.g., liftgate) when essential to control fees.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 65 rating streamlines quoting and auditing, reducing reclass disputes and surprise adjustments.
- Non-hazardous status removes hazmat surcharges and broadens carrier options, often improving transit flexibility and speed.
- Rugged iron construction plus smart bundling lowers handling risk and can reduce damage claims and OS&D exposure.
- Clear commodity naming with decon proof minimizes inspections, detention time, and downstream administrative costs.
